The Cold Jelly at the Roadside

Walking around the small streets nearby the Odeon Shopping Mall under the hot sunny day, brother is searching hardly for the small stall. I'm very curious and I'm wondering what it is...

A small glass box that is filled with coconut jelly, this is the cooling dessert that brother has been searching for. The water of the coconut is made into the jelly while the sliced coconut meat is filled at the top layer. I've enjoyed the crunchiness of the coconut slices and the cooling jelly is definitely a refreshing dessert that has cheered up the hot day.

MK at the Robinson

It's my 1st trip to Hatyai. I'm very happy that we've decided for something different for Mom's birthday. She has been so eager to shop around in Hatyai, planning to buy at least 3 pairs of shoes.

Brother has been insisted that we've to try out the MK Restaurant that is located inside the Robinson. The main seller here is the steamboat yet they do serve mixture of Chinese and Thai cuisines that include roasted meat, Dim Sum and dessert. I'm attracted completely by the mascots that are a vegetable and a duck respectively. Aren't they cute?

We've ordered the platter of Roasted Duck, Red Pork and Crispy Pork. I'm not impressed by the roasted meat as both the duck and pork are not really good. I dislike especially the pork skin that is too thick that it doesn't taste as crispy as I would like to have. The best dish of the day is the Emperor Baked Rice. It's actually a clay pot of glutinous rice that has been fried with Chinese Sausage,  mushroom and mixed vegetable before being steamed to cook. It's very delicious with the correct texture and seasoning of the rice.

Followed up with some side dishes for sharing and we've taken the Fresh Spring Rolls, Fried Bread with Ground Shrimp Topping, Shrimp Shumai and the Duck's Feet with Ground Shrimp. The spring roll is filled with minced meat and Tofu and I do quite like the soft skin that is made of flour except the sweet and slimy sauce. It tastes weird because the sweetness doesn't match the saltiness of the meat. The fried bread contains a layer of grounded shrimp at the center. It tastes quite good especially being filled with the nice aroma of the white sesame. I like it without the sweet and sour dipping sauce. The Shrimp Shumai is the Steamed Prawn Dumpling that we've normally known of. It tastes okay but not really considered as very good. The duck's feet is wrapped with the grounded shrimp and then being rolled up with the bean curd skin, it's special and the taste is also quite good.

Not forgetting to try out the dessert here. We've tried out the Tub Tim Krob in Ice Flake, the Sesame Ball in Ginger Syrup and another is mixture of Ginkgo, Lotus Seed and Red Beans. Everyone has enjoyed the Tub Tim Krob as it's very cold and refreshing yet I'm a little disappointed with the chestnut that is coated with Sago flour as the coating is too soft and sticky. The best dessert goes to the ginger syrup that is strong and spicy whereby it has enhanced the taste of the sesame balls. I like the black sesame that is very smooth yet the ball itself is too soft and slimy. The last dessert is just over sweetened for us.

Most of the dishes are quite ordinary and not even being considered as good yet I've enjoyed part of meals. No harm to try out a new place especially for my 1st trip to Hatyai.

On the Wall... at Antipodean

Starting the preparation of our marriage, we've to travel down to Kuala Lumpur for the endorsement and legalisation of our documents. Meeting the translator at the Embassy of Germany that is located at the Menara Tan & Tan, we're completing the 1st part of our registration of marriage by handing the documents over for the endorsement.

We've decided to have our lunch at the Antipodean Coffee-Cafe-Culture that is located just beside the entrance to the Menara Tan & Tan. They're not providing any menu in hard copy here and you're indeed asked to refer to the menu on the wall. Attila has taken the Big Breakfast that consists of a toast, a piece of bacon or a sausage that can be chosen from chicken, beef or pork, sauteed mushroom, scrambled egg and a hash brown. I've ordered the Grilled Chicken with Tomatoes, Green Beans & Balsamic Vinegar. Both of our meals taste good even though the taste is not very outstanding. Attila not really likes the scrambled egg as it's too soft and it tastes alike the readily mixed in pack that is available from supermarket. I do enjoy the chicken meat that goes perfectly with the balsamic vinegar.

I've additionally taken away the Melting Moment. It's a piece of cookies that is sandwiched with a layer of peanut butter. I think that it's too fluffy that the pieces are falling apart while the cream is not so strong in taste. Oppositely, this is the cookies that Attila has enjoyed to the fullest.

We've enjoyed the service and the friendliness of the waiters and waitresses at the Antipodean. The price is very reasonable and this is definitely a restaurant that you can visit again. For a coffee lover, they do serve good coffee here.

They're Selling... Only Steak & Frites

There's only one dish in the menu; the place is called Steak Frites @23. Being located at 23 Love Lane, the restaurant is serving only beef steak that comes together with fries and salad. I'm quite particular about beef as I'm not really fancy over the strong smell of the meat. Yet, I've decided to give it a try here.

They're specializing in Grilled Australian Beef Tenderloin that is topped with the homemade Café de Paris butter sauce. Let's talk about the appetizer or the fresh lettuce that comes together with the cherry tomato and the sliced almond! The fresh green salad is served with the Mustard Vinaigrette. The sauce is indeed quite refreshing by tasting a little sweet and sour. Attila prefers if it's added with the mustard seeds in order to give it a little crunchiness that it'll be the most perfect sauce?!! The main course of the beef steak is topped with a smooth and thick butter sauce that is very delicious! I love the texture and the strong taste of the sauce that has indeed increased the deliciousness of the beef. I like the done-ness of the steak to be at "Medium" while Attila has enjoyed his at "Medium Rare" or in other words, slightly red and bloody...

To my surprise that I've enjoyed the steak here while the price is as well very reasonable. I'll definitely visit this restaurant again despite I'm not fancy over the beef tenderloin. Maybe, my mind has changed...

Korean & Japanese at Yakiniku

I've heard from William about the Korean grilled meat at the Yakiniku韓日館備長炭燒肉. Comment wise, the BBQ pork here is indeed quite good. Well, I'm a little confused whether it's either a Korean or a Japanese restaurant.

Being served with a cold towel to clean our hand, Attila is cleaning his head indeed.

Ordering the meat for the grilling on the charcoal, we've picked the Zyo-Mino or Pillar Tripe上牛白肉 and the Buta No Enoki Maki or Pork Wrap with Mushroom金针菇卷(猪肉). The charcoal is served in a round "pot" that is topped with a net. We're first surprised that they don't serve any side dishes, not even a small plate of Kimchi. Then, we're quite disappointed that we've to do the grilling by ourselves. I'm not really fancy with the Pillar Tripe as it's actually quite chewy after being grilled on the fire. By the way, it's somehow tasteless. I've enjoyed the Enoki Mushroom that is wrapped inside the pork but they're apparently using cheap pork bacon whereby the meat is as well tasteless.

To fill our hunger, we've also ordered the Kaisen Bibinba or Kimchi Fried Rice with Seafood泡菜海鮮拌飯 and the Toufu Chige or Spicy Miso Soup with Tofu韓式豆腐火鍋. It's delicious! The fried rice is seasoned to the correct saltiness and I've also enjoyed the crunchiness of the Kimchi. The seafood includes the prawn, scallop and squid are quite huge and fresh. Despite the scallop is from the canned food yet it tastes good. On the other hand, the miso soup is not so spicy that Attila can enjoy it as well. The soup is tasty except I'll prefer if the Chef will put in more Tofu and crunch it into smaller pieces.

We don't really like the food that is served at the Yakiniku. For the lazy people, we prefer indeed if the waiter or waitress will grill the meat for us. Anyway, I've at least enjoyed the warm Sake or Rice Wine that is served here.

Coffee that is made by Smith

Deciding to try out a new restaurant on the appointment day with my brother, we've checked out the Coffee Smith that is located at the Karpal Singh Drive. A newly opened cafe yet it has already another shop at the Summerton that is nearby the Queensbay area.

My attention firstly goes to the menu that is using the concept of the daily newspaper whereby the food and beverage are sectioned into the zones of hot spot, special news or private kitchen's cuisine respectively. We've decided to try out the Focus Black Coffee專注黑咖啡 and the Wooden Stick Latte木棍拿鐡. I like the coffee as it tastes quite strong despite the aroma of the coffee is not really so appealing. The latte is smooth in texture whereby it's very milky with a very mild bitterness of the coffee, the correct taste that it should be! Wondering if the name is only a display as I don't find any stick in the coffee... Hahaha!

We've ordered the Italian Spices Fried Chicken & French Fries義式香料炸物拼盤(炸雞&薯條) and the Cuttlefish Risotto with Grilled Cuttlefish炭烤墨魚佐墨魚炖饭. The chicken is not only juicy and tender but also very tasty from the special spices that are garnished at the outer of the meat. Furthermore, the dipping sauce that is alike the mixture of tartar sauce with honey and mustard tastes just perfect! I've finished up the sauce with a spoon indeed. The squid is presented as a beautiful decoration that looks alike the blossom flower. But, it's very chewy whereby I prefer if the squid is grilled slightly further and burnt that the skin is crunchy while the meat is slightly drier yet still succulent. It's a surprise for me that the squid ink risotto contains chopped long beans, it's really weird yet I do quite like the slight crunchiness. A delicious squid that is topped with lemon juice, the risotto is somehow a little damaged by the strong aroma and taste of the rosemary herb.

Ending the dinner with a Chocolate Lava Cake熔岩巧克力蛋糕, we've fallen in love with the thick molten chocolate that is flowing out from the cake. I'm indulged into the chocolaty experience completely. We've no clue about the brownish cream that is put as the base of the cake but it tastes weird and it's bitter, maybe it's brandy liquor?!! I'll re-order this cake again, but this time it's definitely to be served without any cream.

Not only the good coffee and the delicious food, we've also enjoyed the ambient at the Coffee Smith. No wonder that the restaurant is full of customers.
